Graduate school in Physics arms you with the combined knowledge and tools of the brightest minds of one hundred generations, giving you the foundation you need to push against the boundaries of human knowledge. There is no greater thrill than discovery, and no greater honor than peeling back the curtain hiding the secrets of creation.

After your first year of classes, you will be equipped to add to our collective understanding of the Universe. Not all of you will succeed, but those who do will form the next cohort of explorers, trained above all to think clearly and to use the scientific method to conquer any obstacles you choose.

UCSB is recognized as one of the best places to get a Physics education. We are now ranked among the top 10 graduate research physics programs. Our faculty members, post-docs, and graduate students are involved in research covering an incredible range of experimental and theoretical topics in Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy Physics and Gravitation, and Physics of Soft and Living Matter.

We encourage applications from students with diverse backgrounds, including diversity with regard to citizenship and national origin.
