“More is Different”. The title of Phillip Anderson’s 1972 seminal paper epitomizes our modern perception of solid-state physics, and, to a great extent, justifies the wealth of novel phenomena that have unfolded in the field since the beginning of the 20th century. One of the most characteristic and exciting examples is that of the phenomenon of Superconductivity. Trying to answer the seemingly simple question of how the resistivity of a metal behaves at very low temperature, Kamerlingh Onnes, in 1911, stumbled upon an unlikely discovery that has since ignited one of the richest and most intriguing areas of solid-state physics, for theorists and experimentalists alike. In this talk, I will present a broad overview of the phenomenon of superconductivity, following the historical progression of relevant discoveries. Along the way, I will touch upon the technological advancements that made these discoveries possible, and I will discuss some of the numerous practical applications that superconducting materials find today.
