Precision Muon Physics at Fermilab
Manolis Kargiantoulakis, Fermilab
Precision searches in the muon sector, with several attractive characteristics and connections with other areas of intense experimental and theoretical interest, constitute a powerful and well motivated probe for discovery. Fermilab is a global leader in precision muon physics, hosting the Muon g-2 and Mu2e experiments. Muon g-2 will increase precision on the measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment by a factor of 4, directly testing the discrepancy that has guided experimental searches and BSM theory for nearly two decades. Mu2e will increase sensitivity to the charged-lepton flavor violating μ → e transition by 4 orders of magnitude, probing effective mass scales up to 10^4 TeV, well beyond what can be directly accessed at colliders. Both are experiments with very real discovery potential, and their results are anticipated eagerly by the global community. This seminar will discuss the science and status of Fermilab muon experiments, highlighting connections with other frontier searches.
