Dr. Carl Kocher
Professor Emeritus

Abstract: 
During 1964-67, Dr. Kocher conceived of and implemented a series of brilliant experiments that correlated in both space and time the polarizations of successively emitted photons from excited calcium atoms (Kocher, Commins, Phys. Rev. Lett., 18, 575, (1967). These experiments are widely considered to be the first demonstration of quantum entanglement. This discovery continues to have tremendous influence on the rapidly expanding field of quantum science and on resulting technological applications of quantum phenomena in spectroscopy, quantum computing, optical communications, information storage, etc. Dr. Kocher will discuss the theoretical background, experimental design, implementation challenges, and results of his extraordinary measurements that have had enduring scientific significance and impact.
