Grant Remmen

Biography

Grant Remmen is a postdoctoral scholar at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Fundamental Physics Fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara, having previously been a Miller Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Berkeley. A Hertz and NSF Fellow, Dr. Remmen obtained his Ph.D. in 2017 from Caltech and received the 2018 Sakurai Dissertation Award in Theoretical Particle Physics from the American Physical Society for his contributions to the structure and self-consistency of gravity and effective field theories. He received his B.S. with a triple major in Physics, Astrophysics, and Mathematics (summa cum laude, with high distinction) from the University of Minnesota in 2012.

Research

Dr. Remmen’s research interests and expertise in theoretical physics span multiple subfields, including quantum field theory, quantum gravity, general relativity, cosmology, and particle physics. A major component of his research program is the proof of constraints on quantum field theories, developing answers to the fundamental question of which laws of physics are consistent with bedrock principles of quantum field theory and quantum gravity. Notable highlights of Dr. Remmen’s research in this area include foundational work on the Weak Gravity Conjecture, as well as constraints on the effective field theory of the Standard Model and quantum corrections to Einstein gravity. Further endeavors in his research program include holography and connections between quantum entanglement and emergent gravity, as well as work in modern scattering amplitudes and classical general relativity.
